I just finished watching some recordings from Siggraph 2024, and I felt the urge to write down the experience that I just had.
Mark Zuckerberg, the biggie of Meta, sat down with Nvidia’s CEO, Jensen Huang, and described a seriously dystopian futuristic scenario in which your endless doom scrolling will get even more endless with AI-generated content that is built specifically for you.
My worst nightmare.

You’re scrolling through your Instagram feed, and suddenly, BAM ! you’re bombarded with AI-generated content tailored just for you. Based on the thousands to millions of data points that it has collected about you in your life span. That’s right, Zuckerberg says that not only will most of the content you see be recommended based on your interests, but a lot of it will be created using generative AI tools. Can you believe it?
Let me quote him:
“With generative AI, I think we’re going to quickly move into this zone where, not only is the majority of the content that you see today on Instagram just recommended to you from stuff that’s out there in the world that matches your interests… I think in the future a lot of this stuff is going to be created with [generative AI] tools, too”.
and
“Some of that is going to be creators using the tools to create new content. Some of it, I think eventually, is going to be content that’s either created on the fly for you, or pulled together and synthesized through different things that are out there”.
😢
Tears. But not of joy.
Some of this content will be made by creators using AI tools. I am already starting to see more and more of that on my time lines. But some of it will be whipped up on the spot, just for you! And you can bet your ass that the Zuck has already started to tweak his money making machine to churn out AI generated stuff to keep you hooked.
I know what you’re thinking.
Those AI popups taking over Google and social media platforms are already annoying enough. But AI-generated content built specifically for you? That’s a whole new level of crazy! It’s like they’re taking the content you love, sucking out the soul of the creators, and mashing it together to make something new, and I don’t know about you, but I’m not sure I want any part of that.
Meta also released their new AI Studio.
It’s powered by their new Llama 3.1 model, and it lets users discover different AI characters and even create their own AI for fans to interact with.
It’s kinda like GPT meets Character AI.
Zuckerberg says people are already using Meta AI for support, like role-playing stressful situations in a “judgement-free zone.” But let’s be real, there are so many potential issues with relying on AI to deal with stress, not to mention the whole creator-made AI bots and para-social relationships thing.
If you’re dying to make your own AI character, you can do it on the AI Studio website or right in the Instagram app. Or, if you’re feeling nostalgic, you can stick with Character AI, which has been doing this for a while now.
This is just a glimpse into the future that Zuckerberg and Huang were musing about.
It’s not the reality we’re living in today. But it’s definitely the direction we’re heading, and it’s got me wondering what other mind-blowing revelations might come out of Siggraph 2024.
