Discussing the first robot suicide in history

Have you heard about the bizarre incident with a robot that took place in South Korea?

It has been making headlines all over the world, and…. for good reason.

An overworked robot jumped off a 2-meter-high ladder, essentially committing “suicide”!

Can you believe it? I couldn’t when I first read it.

But hold on.

Apparently the incident happened when the robot threw itself down a two-meter-high staircase. The bot worked regular shifts like any other civil servant and even had its own ID card (sic). Just before this happened, the robot exhibited strange behavior, like circling in one spot.

The exact reasons are still under investigation, but overworking and technical malfunctions are considered potential factors.

A robot with mental health issues pushed beyond it’s capacity, decides to deliberately end it’s own, apparently miserable life.

When I read this, it did not take long for me to link this event to a lot of research that is going on how to give robots and AI a level of emotional understanding, or even empathy.

Now, this robot was no ordinary machine.

It worked just like a human, had its own employee card, and was apparently pretty darn good at its job. But despite its success, it decided to end it all by throwing itself down the stairs. Talk about a shocking turn of events! This incident has gone down in history as the first documented robot suicide ever.

As soon as I heard about this, my mind immediately jumped to Walter Tevis’ novel “Mockingbird,” which I’ve reviewed before, and the hit series Westworld. In “Mockingbird,” there’s a robot that wants to die and tries to wipe out humanity in the process. And in Westworld, the lifelike robots start rebelling against humans because of the terrible treatment they endure, and they start killing people left and right. It’s pretty intense stuff.

But here’s the question on everyone’s mind: could this actually happen in real life? Can robots truly have emotions? I want to dive into this topic a bit more, and I’d love for you to share your thoughts and join the discussion.

First, let’s talk about the details of the incident.

The robot in question was created by Bear Robotics, a startup based in California, and it started working at the Gumi City Council in Korea in October ’23. It was known as the “Robot Supervisor“, and its job was to deliver documents, information, and city promotions. Pretty darn innovative to start off with. But unlike other robots that were only responsible for a single floor, this robot handled inter-floor errands on all floors. It worked from 9 to 4, just like the humans in that building, which was longer than the other robots.

The robot normally used the elevator, so the fact that it fell down the stairs raised some eyebrows. People started wondering if it was a suicide or just an accident. After all, the robot had no reason to be on the stairs in the first place.

This brings me to the ethical part of this article: are robots even capable of having emotions?

It’s a tricky question, but let’s break it down.

Emotions are the result of chemical and neurological processes in biological beings. Artificial intelligence and robots are programmed to respond in specific ways to certain situations, which can make them seem like they have human-like reactions. But that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re experiencing emotions.

If a robot recognizes a smile through facial recognition software and smiles back, it doesn’t mean it’s actually happy. It’s just doing what it’s been programmed to do. We have to remember that emotions have a biological basis, and robots simply don’t have that.

I did some digging online to see what experts had to say about this, and I found a range of opinions. Some experts believe that with the current level of technology, robots don’t have emotions and can’t perform complex actions like suicide. Others think this incident might be an exception and needs to be thoroughly investigated. And then there are those who suggest that as we develop more advanced AIs and robots in the future, we might run into these kinds of ethical problems more often.

The bottom line is that there’s no clear scientific consensus on whether robots can have emotions and commit suicide.

But let’s talk about the science behind adding emotions to robots.

Researchers have been working on developing chatbots and virtual assistants that can display empathy and human-like emotions. Take Hume.AI for example. They’re creating AI-powered virtual agents that can understand and respond to human emotions in real-time. And then there’s Pi, the recently unveiled chatbot from Microsoft, which aims to engage in more natural, empathetic conversations with users.

The progress we are making in emotional AI is fascinating, but it also raises some ethical questions.

If we create robots that can convincingly mimic human emotions, how do we ensure they’re not being deceptive or manipulative? And if robots can form emotional bonds with humans, what happens when those bonds are broken? It’s a lot to think about.

Now, let’s talk about Westworld and the rebellion of robots.

In the series, the robots (called hosts) start rebelling against humans after being constantly mistreated and exploited. But how did these robots gain consciousness, and why did they decide to rebel? The answers lie in their complex structures and the ethical debates surrounding them. In Westworld, the robots achieve a level of consciousness that’s almost indistinguishable from humans, and they start questioning their own existence.

There are a few key factors that contribute to this process of gaining consciousness:

1. Complex Algorithms: The robots use sophisticated algorithms that mimic human brains, allowing them to think and learn in human-like ways.

2. Sensory Feedback: With advanced sensory systems, the robots can process and interpret visual, auditory, and tactile signals, helping them better understand their environment.

3. Learning and Adaptation: The robots have the ability to learn from their experiences and mistakes and adapt to new situations, which allows them to work effectively even in changing environments.

4. Self-Awareness: The robots can differentiate between their own bodies and minds and understand their place in the world, which is crucial for developing their consciousness.

So, what factors triggered the robots’ rebellion?

Well, for starters, they were constantly subjected to maltreatment and exploitation. And that sparked their desire for freedom. As they started to remember and question what had been done to them, their consciousness led them to rebel. They began questioning their existence and their place in the world, and they sought freedom and equality.

This incident does makes me wonder about where AI might go in the future.

Is it possible that more advanced AIs and robots could develop a human-like consciousness? It might sound like science fiction now, but in a world where technology is advancing at breakneck speed, nothing seems impossible.

Walter Tevis’ “Mockingbird,” the Westworld series, and the story of the robot in Gumi all need to make us think about what it means to be human and to think like a human. With the technology we have now, I don’t think this incident was a suicide, but who knows? Maybe in the future, we’ll find ourselves in a world where robots can experience emotional and existential crises just like we do.
